The
long weekend surely spoils you. Makes you laze around a bit more,
makes you forget about the Monday morning blues and makes you want to
get away from the city even if it is for a mere 24 hours. Following a
conversation with two friends over an evening movie we decided to add
a little spontaneity to life by heading off to the closest hills next
morning. The conversation that materialised into action at precisely
1 in the night, saw us ready (albeit slightly groggy) and waiting at
the station for the first 4:40 train to Karjat. We were headed to
Matheran!
Covered in clouds till as far as you can see and the temperature teasing you to stop for chai and biscuit – The journey was as good as the destination itself! We got off at Neral, ate vada pavs for breakfast and caught a fixed price cab from just outside...Our eyes fixed at the window taking in the breathtaking scenery around us! A 20-30 minute walk later up to Matheran town, a walk that led through railway tracks and valleys, we were in this quaint little hill town where mornings were as lazy as us and evenings as bustling! A bowl of maggi, a glass of masala thums up and chennai express songs later we set off to find our next pit stop!
Sitting
on a mountain top, legs slightly damp from the stream of water behind
you, and a valley that extends far beyond your eyes can see...It's
still difficult to wrap my head around the fact that we actually were
there! Conversations of the serious kinds and hearty laughs over
trivial monkey matters ensued. At what point this impromptu trip
turned out perfect...I would never know. I was dressed in a blue hat
and a plastic rain coat, I walked for miles and miles (or what seemed
like miles and miles), ran out of cash in a
one-atm-that-doesn't-work-city, and took a toy train back to city
life. The aches and pains in the muscles you ask? Totally worth it!

That monkey totally wanted to kill me! hahahaha :D
ReplyDeleteAnd we must go back to take revenge from those horses who gave us one hell of a bumpy ride uphill!
:D
The monkey was possessed! I tell you! And not the horses, those people who hit said horses are the ones we need to catch hold of!
DeleteNicely written post...

I absolutely loved your account of Matheran! Hope this time when I visit this place, I get to experience such beautiful weather too!
Good post. Matheran is a quiet, serene hill-station, which has managed to maintain its tranquility despite being thronged by a large number of tourists every year. The town administration charges a small fee for the up-keep and cleanliness of the area, because of which they have been successful in retaining its pristine, natural ambience.
